Hi, my name is Brandon. I am a grade 2 student at a school in Tecumseh. I saw you at the book signing at Indigo on Sunday. It was exciting to meet a real author! I really want to be an author when I grow up. I already write my own books with my own character, Oofie.
I really liked both your books! My favourite character is Dan Delion. I really liked it when Dan Delion won the track meet against Speedy Seedy. In the Ghost Walk, I really liked it when Dan Delion, Holly Hocks, Johnny Jump-ups, Foxy Gloves, Virginia Creeper and Snapdragon found out that Mrs. Yarrow was really Marigold.
I also liked that I learned about a lot of new flowers that I didn't know about before!
I hope that the next book in the series will take place in winter, because I noticed the first two took place in the summer and fall. I can't wait to meet some new characters! Do you know when the next book in the series is coming out? I hope soon!

"I have two daughters, ages 10 and 7. My oldest daughter read Dan Delion's Secret awhile back and she absolutely loved it! She didn't put it down for two days straight. As soon as she finished it, she asked me if you were going to write more of them.
She is thrilled that there's a second book now. As a matter of fact, it was 'dress as your favorite storybook character' at school today and she wanted to dress all in black and go as Virginia Creeper. I said to her "no one will know who you are supposed to be." She said "I'll just take the book with me."

The story really captured them. I found the book to have a great balance between mystery, fantasy, friendship, healthful living and of course the whole gardening aspect. I also really liked how Shelley Awad touched on the trials of bullying as well as learning to accept others. Her choice of wording helped my kids relate to the characters. Shelley's charming book is filled with intrigue and whimsical, memorable characters (like friends we went to school with.) All these components together make for a fascinating read. Shelley transports her readers into her magical world making this book a real page turner. Anyone who likes children books will find this a real work of art. "Shelley, Michaela and I just spent the last three hours reading your book cover-to-cover together. She would not let me put it down! She loved it! She loved the illustrations! She really used the cover to reference clues throughout the story. She kept going back to it and noticing more from your very well-written, descriptive writing! She really could visualize all the characters and we talked alot about the language used to describe each character in such detail.
Your messages were wonderful on many levels. We enjoyed talking about the factual information about plants and flowers, the use of the internet and library for research, and talked a great deal about the social interactions that took place between the children, particularly their initial feelings about Virginia Creeper. Michaela got a huge kick out of Johnny Jump-Ups character and found his nervousness around exploring the mansion to be laugh-out-loud funny! She loved the clues, the mystery, and she made many connections and predictions using details included earlier in the story as she tried to figure out what was going to happen next. She was certain that Virginia Creeper was a witch almost right up until the end when we found out the real story of why she was always in black. We even made a connection to Stephen Covey's Habit of Highly Effective People--Seek First to Understand, Then Seek to Be Understood (my father's influence, of course, right Mitch!). That message was a great component of the story. It was wonderful to be able to talk about the friendship between the Greenhouse Kids. The book gave us many opportunities to do this too!
