First you will need to select a glass container. A fish bowl works really well. It does not matter if your container has a lid or not.

Place a layer of pebbles on the bottom of the container. This will allow for good drainage. If your container has a lid, you will need to place a layer of activated charcoal over the layer of pebbles. This will keep the air fresh. This is the same charcoal that is used in aquariums, so you can purchase this anywhere that sells aquarium supplies.

If you are making an open terrarium, there is no need for the charcoal. If your container does not have a lid, you can create one by stretching clear plastic wrap over the top, securing it with an elastic band.

Next, add a layer of spaghnum moss on top. This prevents the soil from settling down into the pebbles. It is like a filter that will allow the water to filter down to the bottom, but not the soil. This moss is sold at garden centers. If you are not able to find any, you could use a piece of very fine screen. The screen will eventually rust and need to be replaced.

Add regular potting soil. Unless you are using a specialty plant, like cactus, regular soil is best. Now you are ready to add your plants and/or seeds. Try to arrange them in a way that looks nice. Follow any plant instructions that you have and water when done planting.

Add decorations - use your imagination - you can add rocks, marbles, toys, just about anything you can think of!
